The Role of Women in Othello - 777 Words

A woman is the full circle but it is ordinarily believed that women are the weaker species. Women in this play conduct themselves in such a way that they allow men to dominate them. Back in the days women were taken as property. They were distrusted and mistreated. Men held more power than women. The disparity in the number of characters expresses the preferred gender in the play; there are more men than women. This bigotry is very much accentuated in the whole play. Women are spoken vicious of and often treated as furniture. They depict to be conquered yet the whole play is cantered on women. The play involves three women and they are all kept; Desdemona who is married to Othello, Emilia who is the wife of Iago and Bianca who is the mistress of Cassio. In the first act of the play, after Othello and Desdemona’s merger (marriage), Barbantio accuses him before the duke. . â€Å"O thou foul thief!†(act1.2. 62) â€Å"She is abus’d, stol’n from me†. (act1.3.60) He utters in such a way that he refers to Desdemona as his possession, she was stolen from him he claims. He calls Othello thief which articulate that he purloined Barbantio’s commodity. â€Å"A man he is of honesty and trust. To his conveyance I assign my wife†,(act1.3.281.282) Othello in this perspective handles Desdemona like a perishable good that needs to be conveyed and taken care of with delicacy.â€Å"†¦come here my dear love. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not want a conflict in the pacific as the United States was not prepared for war. For instance, the oil embargo that was organized between the British, the Dutch, and the United States was about 90% o f Japan’s imported oil. The Kenya Shifta War and Realism free essay sample

In this essay I am going to discuss the Kenyan war that has emerged in 1963 due to long-lasting grievances about bad treatment from British colonial isolation and ethnic Somali in Kenya irredentism drive to unite all other five Somali lands with Kenya into a greater Somalia. The issue of British colony had otherwise been much less to do with this war, the main reason to war was that of irredentism by Somalis. This conflict went on as Somalis resisted from being governed by a dark skinned government of the Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta while at the same time seek unity. Somali seek independence at the expense of Kenya. Somalia wanted to be in power to rule a unified greater Somalia but Kenya couldn’t let their borders be destroyed due to ethnic driven irredentism by Somalis. The Somali independence threatened the national and political unity in Kenya. Thereafter the effects or results of these differing goals led to the Shifta war of 1963. I will further in this essay outline how power and force was used to reach the ends of this war. The main point of this essay shows the understanding of realism aspects that are interlinked with this war or conflict. I shall further in this essay argue on how the theory of Realism and power pursuit by Somalis led to the outburst of this war called Shifta and how it brought about end to this conflict. At the heart of this war there is a high power drive or fight for power by both Kenya and Somalia and both states were highly motivated to use force of aggression to be the most powerful state. Somalis in Kenya had an idea of breaking the borders of Kenya and merge it with the other five states of Somalia to form a greater Somalia. This was based on the idea of the common ethnicity by Somalis as they were Muslims by religion and shared common language. The possibility of this idea to come to reality was never assured since the British colonialism in Kenya has separated different kinds of ethnic groups to avoid disputes that arise due to ethnicity, religion or any culture and it has been the effective system to control Kenyan state since the state of Kenya had more than eighty-seven ethnic groups at that time. So the idea of Somalia of grouping or break Kenyan borders to form a great Somalia was not to be effective because Muslims by their religion are not like Christians who can exist within other religions and be able to be Christians without affecting or be affected by other religions or cultures. Muslims do not associate themselves with other kinds of cultures or religions, they are sort of discriminatory towards other clans. As this drive of irredentism by Somalia has been proven not to be effective by Kenyans, Kenyans had to lookout for their beliefs and its political system as well. The only way Kenya protected itself from this Somalia legacy, it had to fight for its dependency as well. Kenya therefore declined Somalis proposal as this Somalia system threatened Kenya’s political and national unity. As Kenyans declined Somalis proposal the views of both states clashed and this clash led to the adaptation of realism instruments to resolve conflict and that is to inflict force of aggression to each other to maintain or gain power. This act of inflicting force or aggression to one another is the pillar or it is at the centre of the realist states. And the good way of inflicting force or aggression to one another is to gain something out of it. The only thing the realists seek to gain at any act is power. Somalia was the first to challenge Kenya to war with the main pursuit of power to rule the entire Kenya state. Kenya had to fight back the Somalis to maintain their power. As Kenya fought for its independence from Somalia they had to use force to deter Somalis from taking what’s rightfully theirs which is their land and closed borders. Somalis it seemed they couldn’t find or think of any better way they could have used to try and settle its proposed deal to Kenya. Going to war was the better option they thought of, this is because they are Muslims by religion and they thought going to war with Kenya was just. Now that’s the realists’ way of dealing with uncertainty. In my opinion, Realism was the ruling political system that existed in this conflict. Great Britain as the father of Kenya due to colonization had to intervene to try and bring about an end to this war between Kenya and Somalia. The question is, how was it going to do that? The answer to that question is otherwise simple. It starts with the reason why would Great Britain colonise Kenya, and that is because Kenya has an abundance of raw materials that Britain was exploiting. Somalia with their non-profit making legacy of irredentism was to be a bad effects to how Britain rules Kenya. Britain had to protect its source of profit by helping Kenya defeat Somalia. Britain then supplied Kenya with arms to fight back Somalia so that the war will come to an early end so that Britain will  continue with the exploitation of raw materials from Kenya. So literally speaking, Somalia was just an itch that Britain had to scratch off. Britain even took some of Kenyans and trained them for war so that they will fight Somalis effectively and strategically to lead to an early end of war. This act by Britain is influenced by the system of realism as it wasn’t interested in understanding the war causes it just used its power to get control of its interests. It only had to make sure that it’s still have access to Kenyan’s raw materials. If it let Somalis win, it was going to be hard for them to regain full access to Kenya if it changes to great Somalia as most of the Somalis were Muslims and believe in just war and they believed fighting for independence from colonialism was just. So as negotiation couldn’t go any further or any better, Britain motivated acts of realism in this war so that its economy doesn’t get too much affected. It is the belief of realists that negotiations take long to reach a favourable conclusion and leads to more damage as negotiations are underway. We see this very clearly in this Shifta war. Both states were not so much interested to talk but to forcedly and aggressively claim and take what they wanted (act by Somalia) and forcedly or aggressively protect or secure what they thought was rightfully theirs (act by Kenya). Somalis went to war first with Kenya because by nature they are known of being homogenous, Muslim by religion with a warrior culture of proven ability and history of martial prowess unlike Kenya. Kenya was not too much of a big deal to Somalia. Somalis knew they will win the war and some of Kenyans knew this as well, but then since them all or both are realists Kenya just had to go to war just to utilise its power no matter how big or small. That is why then the Great Britain had to intervene by supplying Kenya with fire arms even with flying squad and train Kenyans on how to fight Somalis because it knew that Kenya had no ability to win the war against Somalis. Reasonably Britain doesn’t really care about Kenya as you might think, what it cares about are the raw materials it has exploited from Kenya that it stood to lose if Somalia win the war. As much power Somalis had, they were ready to utilize it as they attacked polling and police stations of Kenya and the rest. It is the idea of realists that states should seek power and a state having power must show the potential to use it towards other stated and that’s exactly what Somalis did and according to their realism system of dealing with grievances they had the potential of winning the war, sadly Britain couldn’t let that happen. Now as I have tried to make a clear understanding of realism that penetrates within this war through the proliferation of fire arms between states and no interest in negotiations I shall now outline how the power existed within this war. Within this conflict power exists the most as at the centre of realism, power is all that matters and realism is just all about power. Power is what defines the operating system of Realism and its readiness to be utilized whenever necessary was a command. (Off the topic; if for example Samsung Galaxy SIII was Realism, Android would be its power of operation). However, power in this conflict seems to have conditions. For example, if Somalia had this conflict with Ethiopia, the Great Britain was not going to intervene, why? Because it has no interest in doing so and there is nothing to gain in either loss or win of either states. Back to Kenyan Shifta war, Britain was more than interested to exert its power to assist Kenya in winning the Shifta war. This power that bares here is because Britain have wealth to take care of from Kenya and when Kenya wins the war, Britain still have full access to Kenyans raw materials. However, Somalis were ready to finish or win the war as they have started it. But Kenya became more powerful as Britain assisted them. Somali strength was dramatically decreasing as Kenya used high technological weapons that Somalis can’t afford. Also, Kenya even killed their cattles and camels that belonged to Somalis so the war became mean and strong for Somalis. All of a sudden Kenya was now the ruler in this war and it was indeed in a power trip. If I further explain the power trip that Kenya was recently enjoying towards to the end of Shifta war, the power that Kenya really had was the economic power that had a lot to do with the involvement of Britain so Britain had to support Kenya to defeat Somalis. Without raw materials that Kenya had, there would be no economic power it had hence British wasn’t going to support Kenya to win the war. So power within this conflict had conditions and without those conditions, Kenya was left powerless. Power that Kenya had then became the major solution to bring about this war to an end and the lack of or otherwise lessor power Somalis had was good news for Britain. Something else was going on in the emergence of Shifta war. Let alone Shifta war being caused mostly by the issue of irredentism, the other cause was that of bad treatments by British government to Kenya and Kenyan Somalis. For as much as Kenyan Somalis seek independence and wanted to unite Kenya with other five Somali lands, Somalia didn’t want anything to do with the British colony because of its aggression and stealing of wealth Somalis believed it was rightfully theirs. British colony was the other cause of this war. To prove how powerful Britain had been to this war, just think how it used Kenya to defeat Somalia. In my understanding the Shifta war was not between Kenya and Somalia but it was between the Great Britain and Somalia. Kenya was used as a means to the ends of Britain. Now this proves how powerful Britain is and its readiness to use its power, as it seek to win Kenya it used Kenya to get rid of Somalia and that was the end of war and more resource exploitation by Britain in Kenya whilst even Kenya didn’t feel good under British colony. Kenya had nothing or very less to do to challenge the British to war as powerful Britain is and its use of realism instruments to deter conflict. For as many interests Somalia had starting from religious, independence and ethnicity or clan grouping to name a few, if anyone threatens those interests, Somalis were ready to defend them, even if protecting those interests had a potential to lead to warfare Somalis were ready to take that risk. That is why it was pleasurable for Britain to intervene because they knew that with Somalia government in power things were going to change to worst for Britain in its raw materials exploitation. The fight of Somalia was the fight of power other than unity. Somali fought for more than just land, they fought for the clans’ right, freedom from British colony and power. It seeked power to rule all Somalia spheres and add Kenya to become a great Somalia. As they seek to increase their power they were prepared to fight for it aggressively and that’s what realists do. Towards the resolution of the Shifta war. The solution was just that of realism perspective, â€Å"Power†. If it wasn’t for the power that Britain had landed to Kenya, war wasn’t going to end anytime sooner because Somalia was still facing the great fight of the Great Britain. What would have made it worse is that it was going take long as Somalis fail to accept failure. So Britain realized this and thought strategically by using Kenya to put an end to this war. Despite Kenyan government offer for economic assistance to Somalia to improve pastures and install new water resources like boreholes, Somalis regarded these tenders as less desirable that the unity with Kenya. Despite Kenya becoming more powerful, Somalia just had a lot of losses due to war, cattles, population, running out attacking equipment, loss of outside support by other countries, clans turning against each other and the war just became meaningless. That was the power drainage by Kenya to Somalia. It was rather pointless fighting with Somalia anymore. Power that Kenya had brought about an end to this Shifta war. This proves the existence of realism operating system at the centre of the Shifta war. Shifta war showed so much aspects to understand realism and power on how it really works. Shifta war as started aggressively by inflicting force to one another, it had otherwise ended with war when Kenya became more powerful than Somalia hence realism ends gained. The Shifta war again showed us the conditions of power that penetrated between Kenya, Somalia and Britain as Britain chose to favour Kenya than Somalia to win the war. At the end Kenya remained Kenya and Somalia remained as Somalia. Going to war was absolutely a waste of resources for Somali.

The causes of alcohol consumption is simply represented in Fig 1; this figure briefly explains that 45% of the people in Community X consume alcoholic beverages for minor influences as the simple fun and njoyment that comes with the pleasures of drinking. One the other hand, 20% indicate that the partake of the activity as a result of Peer Pressure where individuals, mostly teenagers, drink because they either think it is â€Å"cool† or o prove a point. However, 30% population specified that they â€Å"drink† for the little curiosity of finding out what other individuals get, feel or benefit from it, this being. Mainly just experimenting the activity. A smaller 5% say they drink alcohol because of Depression because alcohol is known to somewhat relieve the stress that causes Depression. pic]Fig2 Whereby the effects of consuming Alcohol are concerned, almost half of the population indicate that no harm is done, as 55% of them feel normal after their intake of the substance. And so, this could be one of the reasons, the level of consumption in the community should be monitored. 5 % of them say they feel tipsy, an eerie felling, that may cause them to intake alcohol regularly. However, a few of them seem to be affected as 10% of the population state that they have headaches which may discourage them to do so. Another 10% indicate that they simply do not drink alcohol, mainly because of religion and other personal reasons. pic]Fig3 In order to manage the level of alcohol usage in Community X. Fig 3 shows that 70% of Its members indicate that the individuals who already drinking, should drink responsibly Suggesting that they should look at the consequences of whether it be becoming an alcoholic or getting drunk. Another 15% say they these individuals should simply tone down their intake of by drinking less of the substance. On the other hand, the remainder of the population , 15%, indicated more drastic measures to the solution. Fig 3 shows that 10% of them say people should just stop drinking while the other 5% believe they should seek professional help. These responses therefore can be interpreted as the respondents knowing someone who drink too much. Procedures Used to Collect Data Community X has an estimated number of 130 individuals; due to calculations, it was discovered that 15% of the population was needed in order to gather possible causes, effects, and solutions to the level of alcohol usage in the community. That is, ( 15% of 130 =20 ) Therefore, a total of 35 questionnaires were distributed with the expectation that at least 20 would be returned. Later, it was decided that the questionnaires be given to random personnel. This resulted in the recording of information on each individual on small pieces of paper, placed in a box, shaken and a total of 35 slips were selected. Therefore, 35 individuals received a copy of the questionnaire, were successfully completed and left in my mailbox 4 Hart Rd. Cheleston Gardens. Findings The survey carried out resulted in numerous interesting discoveries due to the level of alcohol usage in Community X. These state: Alcohol is consumed mainly through social activities where 70% of the individuals indicate that they partake of alcoholic beverages when â€Å"partying†. The most common effect known caused by drinking is neutral between 1. Becoming an alcoholic 2. Being sexually active at an early age. Which was I therefore observed that the questionnaires have revealed a 50-50% ratio. The individuals of Community X believe that in order for the level of alcohol be decreased, Rehabilitation Centers should be established. However, all 100% of the people who agree, stated that it will not be fully effective for the common reason that the alcoholics will not endure the necessary procedures that will be required. Recommendations The level of alcohol usage should not be taken lightly, as many young people in Community X are partaking of the activity when are far too young to be drinking. That said, I would recommend to this community that the decreasing level of alcohol us be accomplished through two simple objectives. These objectives include: ? Allowing adults of the community to take on leadership qualities whereby they look out for children who they see with alcoholic beverages and hinder them from consuming it. More specifically to shopkeepers, since in recent survey it is proven that most individuals especially children receive alcohol by the availability of such beverages in the community shops. Talk to individuals about drinking as little talks can do great things. There are people who are willing to listen. Parents will see to it that their children go to these sessions and ensure that they understand the dangers of drinking. My argument is that smokers should be banned from doing their nasty and revolting habit in public. People make their livings farming and selling the deadly crop tobacco. My question for all the tobacco farmers out in the world today is: why not grow a crop like corn or something of that nature? If one is not able or does not have the knowledge to grow something beneficial, why not graze cattle or other livestock? There is simply no excuse for it. My Grandfather grew tobacco and even gave some to his brother to smoke out of his rusty old pipe. One afternoon, his brother died, the cause of his death was tobacco or also known as poison. After this incident, my Grandfather felt guilty about his brothers death. He stopped growing his cash crop tobacco, and started raising livestock. He tells me that story every time I visit him at his house. Tobacco farmers are not bad people. The majority of them are really good people, and just dont realize what they are doing to the world and people around them. The farmers are not to blame. The blaming should be credited to the consumers who buy the cigarettes and the cigarette companies, which produce them, but I do think that the farmers can change what they do with their fields. The main benefit of smoking in public is that the cigarette companies receive free advertisement. The public smoker influences the peers around them and obviously brings more consumers to buy cigarettes. When bringing in more consumers, the company expands leading to more jobs. The question is, whats more important: a few more jobs offered or more deaths resulting from cigarettes? ...

Legalization of Marijuana Essay The terms ‘weed’ or ‘grass’ strike meaning to many Americans. When thinking of these terms, they are commonly associated with having the ‘munchies’ also known as being extremely hungry due to the side affects of smoking marijuana. What most Americans don’t realize is the benefits that can come from legalizing marijuana because their minds are clouded by the stereotypes associated with the average ‘pot smoker’. Dismiss the corny jokes and stereotypes for a second and consider the truths that are unveiled. In Timothy Egan’s â€Å"Give Pot a Chance,† Egan looks beyond the stigma of smoking weed and points out the benefits that will come from legalization. Although the government is wrongfully hindering us from legalizing marijuana, it should be a national wide policy due to the large benefit of tax regulations that will and has already arise. Egan starts his opinion with three main arguments: marijuana related drug wars, hypocrisy, and the most important argument he points out is the tax revenue that will be generated. Drug related wars are extremely prevalent today. Egan states that there are over 853,000 arrest made for marijuana related offenses. 60,000 people have been killed because of drug wars and violent crimes regarding the distribution of marijuana. Many people are being affected by the violence of the underground markets. He briefly goes over statistical numbers and significant data to further emphasize his argument for legalization. He quickly delves into the hypocrisy of not legalizing marijuana. He explains how our sports industry would completely collapse without all the legal drugs provided by various companies. Popular products include five-hour energy, red bull, and other pills for other uses. He points out how there were thousands of illnesses and fatalities regarding Five Hour Energy. This is an over the shelf product that can be obtained by anyone. In retaliation, Egan brings up how there are little to no people dying from marijuana ingestion. This also brings attention to one of the most common argument as to why people oppose legalization: that it is  unhealthy for the human body when taken in large doses. Although not explained very well, Egan points out the hypocrisy in the rationale of people thinking this way. Any substance taken in large doses is harmful to any human. Even something as healthy as water is bad in large doses. Although this is not a big part of his argument and does not explicitly say why marijuana is good for one or for the nation, it leads up to and adds to his claim of legalizing marijuana. The main argument for legalization and data that Egan gives is the tax revenue that will come from it. Egan arrives at this data by carefully studying the states that already have legalized medical marijuana including the District of Columbia and 18 other states. Washington State officials estimate that licensed marijuana stores will generate 532 million dollars in revenue every year. On top of that, legalization will decrease all the billions of dollars currently wasted on prosecuting and investigating marijuana cases. Money is being wasted on investigating marijuana cases while in reality most do not even get prosecuted or even fined. Since it is legal in some states and not others, enforcement of marijuana laws are clouded making the United States lose more money. If all states had the same rules it would be easier to regulate and gain an abundance of tax revenue from. Legalization of marijuana will benefit the United States as a nation. Egan agrees that a â€Å"whiff of positive and even monumental change is in the air†. He claims that legalization will benefit us tremendously in many ways, but specifically with the generation of revenue from tax. An influx of money from marijuana taxation would greatly help the United States with financial debt. Egan explicitly links his data to his claim by openly asking his audience to consider his data and apply it to the whole nation and then stating that the taxation would help the United States. He explains that the success from the state of Washington proves that other states will strive as well, thus adding to the success of the nation as a whole. Because there are so many issues and contradicting conflicts surrounding the issue of marijuana, Egan has to state his warrant to further emphasize his reasons for legalization and make apparent the change that could happen. The rhetor, Egan, suggests that the change will most likely happen by stating that â€Å"Obama is uniquely suited to make the argument for change. On his issue, he’ll have support from the libertarian right and the humanitarian left.† Egan implies that since 19 states have  already legalized the use of medical marijuana, many states will follow in their footsteps so it is only a matter of time. Unfortunately Egan had a very powerful qualifier that was not adequately explained. Egan implicitly argues that we, as a nation, should not wait for other states to slowly make the change to legalize. Obama and his administration have the power and more importantly the support to change it now. The lack of explaining this weakened a crucial part of his argument for national legalization. Egan believes national legalization should is needed soon rather than legalization by individual states. At the end of his speech he starts delving into his opinion he quickly adds how the law system is not enforced enough. Egan argues that with legalization nation wide, everyone would be on the same page, which is completely true. With nation wide legalization, the issue of use and abuse can be properly discussed and determined. He uses the example of alcohol and how campaigns against drunk driving have saved countless of lives when alcohol is so easy to obtain. This could be the same way as marijuana. With proper laws, marijuana could be regulated efficiently and safely. Unfortunately he only briefly states this and does not fully explain it clearly. He is implying that marijuana is a problem because congress has chosen to make it a problem because they decided not to deal with it. I thought this did not necessarily weaken his argument but left his audience thinking. Egan was successful at proving his point because of his strong claim, data, and warrant. He chose an engaging and interesting claim that is relatable to many Americans. The sets of data he chose to support his argument was tacitful because all Americans can benefit from money therefore everyone is in some way going to benefit from legalization. Egan makes clear the clouded stereotypes and stigma of marijuana and illuminates the truths involved. Broadcast Journalists and The Inverted Pyramid Style of Presenting the

In 1965, American broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow stated, â€Å"We cannot make good news out of bad practice.† Although this quotation was originally in response to critics who wanted him to ignore racial problems to promote a better public image abroad, it can also be applied to the importance of presenting a quality newscast. In America, news media is considered the forth branch of the United States government. This concept stems from a belief that it is the news media's responsibility to deliver clear and accurate information to the populace in a compelling manner. Considering the effect the news has on society, as journalism scholars we need to ask why clarity and attention are important in a newscast and what can be done to ensure clarity and attention is used in a news video or news broadcast? Using the 2010 textbook Broadcast News Handbook and personal experiences from Digital News class, we will analyze the following questions. To do so, we will examine the importance of clarity and attention in a newscast, and then finally take a look at three aspects to ensure clarity and attention is in a news video or news broadcast. First, there is the importance of clarity and attention in a newscast. The history of delivering news has evolved throughout the years. From exchange information via radio to have a having a television channel’s primary objective be producing news, the news media have grown in the methods notifying the public. However, a couple of things that hasn’t change are the media’s goal of delivering clear and engaging products. As Assistant Professor Dave Cupp of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill explained in a 2010 article, â€Å"Today the world remains as confusing as ever, and new technolog... ... a report remember to record scenes that involve some sort of action, the viewer will be persuade to pay attention because the are interested in what the people are doing. Rohana and Rohani experiences were attributed by their father and their step-mother. There is a main locus of causality attributing to their experiences. The two sisters ran off home as the father was being abusive, mainly towards Rohani where she was bald by him and the father was driven by their step-mother to behave in such abusive way. This whole scene is projected more towards the external attribution on the two sisters where the cause would be the father being abusive on his two children to fulfil his second wife’s inquires.Rohana and Rohani lived together in an old bungalow and survived on one small income which was being earned by Rohani. Rohani took a job in a pub to support herself and her sister, even though it is beyond her religious views. She did this because she had to protect her sister during the day from their father finding Rohana and taking Rohana away from her. And Rohani knew that she will be holding on to that job for only awhile until she reaches the le gal age, where she will be handed over the trust fund that was left by their late mother.Brian’s experiences are mainly attributed by his parents. One day, Brian was secretly reading an inappropriate magazine at a young age and his dad caught his act of doing so. Brian was dragged out of the house and abandoned naked by his dad on a street far away from his home. Brian was extremely infuriated on the embarrassing punishment that his father had carried out. Plus, his mother did not even say a word or helped him when he was dragged out of the house. At this point, the parents were trying to shape a better son and punishing him for his wrong doings.Under the stability concept of making attribution, the whole situation was an unstable cause, the father’s mood changed where he turned angry when he caught his son doing an inappropriate act. Brian held grudge against his parents by not returning home and being rude to his mother whenever she calls him back home or to church. He lives independently and he serves as a teacher in a public school. The two sisters, Rohana and Rohani left home at a young age as well as Brian but they are judged differently based on the cause.Rohana and Rohani viewed that Brian left home due to his personality where he held grudge against his parents by not returning home and being rude to his mother when he was the one to be blamed for reading an inappropriate magazine. The dad punished him so that he could raise a better son. Brian was internally attributed due to his negligence of learning from the mistake and his attitude which he’s not able to respect his parents in a verbally mannered way. Rohani found Brian very rude when he spoke on the phone to his mother eventough the embarrassing situation took place many years back and even when his father has passed away.Brian viewed that the two sisters left home was due to a situational cause when Rohani told him what had happened. Rohana and Rohani’s father was ph ysically abusive towards Rohani. He bald Rohani’s head when she refused to head over to the saloon with her step-mother who wanted Rohani to cut and style Rohani’s hair exactly like hers. The sisters were externally attributed by their father who was siding more towards their step-mother instead of his own children. My reflection of thoughts on the movie changed as it progressed. Rohani was abused by her dad because of her step-mother, which was why she and her sister ran off home.They hid away from him for his cruel behaviour towards them. I was attributing that they hated their father for not showing enough love on them as for the way he had behaved. But later on, my views changed when Rohana was snatched back by her father and Rohani went back looking for her sister when she found that her father had stroke. Rohani then stayed by her father’s side, taking care of him and not even bothering about the past of what he had done to her. Apart from that, Brian is a type of guy who doesn’t believes in god and never tends to step into church for his mass prayers.He was also being rude whenever his mother calls him home or to church. I attributed that he isn’t a person to be proud of himself for not believing in god and I was stereotyping him for not respecting his religious views. But then my views changed as the movie revealed that, he was punished to be naked and abandoned by his father in a street after he was caught reading an inappropriate magazine as a child. He felt that there wasn’t love from his parent for treating him that way; also, his mother did not save him when he was punished. He was traumatizing skeletons in his closet from his childhood days.

CHAPTER 15 Lean operations and JIT Short case: Just-in-time at Jimmy’s St James’s Hospital, in Leeds in the north of the UK, affectionately known as ‘Jimmy’s’, is Europe’s largest teaching hospital. It employs around 4500 people to support the 90 000 in-patient treatments per year and over 450 000 total admissions. Under increasing pressure to reduce costs, to contain inventory and to improve service, the Supplies Department has undertaken a major analysis of its activities, to try and adopt some of the ideas from the JIT approach.The initial review highlighted that Jimmy’s had approximately 1500 suppliers of 15 000 different products at a total cost of ? 15 million. Traditionally, the Supplies Department ordered what the doctors asked for, with many cases of similar items supplied by six or more firms. Under a cross-functional task force, comprising both medical and supply staff, a major programme of supplier and product rationalizatio n was undertaken, which also revealed many sources of waste. For example, the team found that wards used as many as 20 different types of gloves, some of which were expensive surgeons’ gloves costing around ? per pair, yet in almost all cases these could be replaced by fewer and cheaper (20 pence) alternatives. Similarly, anaesthetic items which were previously bought from six suppliers, were single-sourced.The savings in purchasing costs, inventory costs and general administration were enormous in themselves, but the higher-order volumes also helped the hospital negotiate for lower prices. Suppliers are also much more willing to deliver frequently in smaller quantities when they know that they are the sole supplier. Peter Beeston, the Supplies Manager, said: ‘We’ve been driven by suppliers for years †¦ hey would insist that we could only purchase in thousands, that we would have to wait weeks, or that they would only deliver on W ednesdays! Now, our selecte d suppliers know that if they perform well, we will assure them of a long-term commitment. I prefer to buy 80 per cent of our requirements from 20 or 30 suppliers, whereas previously, it involved over a hundred. ’ The streamlining of the admissions process also proved fertile ground for improvement along JIT principles. For example, in the Urology Department, one-third of patients for non-urgent surgery found their appointments were being cancelled.One reason for this was that in the time between the consultant saying that an operation was required and the patient arriving at the operating theatre, there were 59 changes in responsibility for the process. The hospital reorganized the process to form a ‘cell’ of four people who were given complete responsibility for admissions to Urology. The cell was located next to the ward and made responsible for all record keeping, planning all operations, ensuring that beds were available as needed, and telling the patient wh en to arrive. As a result, the 59 handovers are now down to 13 and the process is faster, cheaper and more reliable.Jimmy’s also introduced a simple kanban system for some of its local inventory. In Ward 9’s storeroom, for example, there are just two boxes of 10 mm syringes on the shelf. W hen the first is empty, the other is moved forward and the Ward Sister then orders another. The next stage will be to simplify the reordering: empty boxes will be posted outside the store, where codes will be periodically read by the Supplies Department, using a mobile data recorder. The plant has 55 production lines and 45 different production processes, and the manufacturing systems employed are of a flexibility that allows them to run each of the 1300 product types every two months – that means over 150 different products each week. But the plant was no t always as flexible as this.It has been forced to enhance its flexibility by the requirement to ship over 80 million items each year. The sheer logistics involved in purchasing, producing, storing and distributing the volume and variety of goods has led to its current focus on introducing JIT principles into the manufacturing process. To help achieve its drive for flexibility and for JIT production, L’Oreal organized the site into three production centres, each autonomous and focused within technical families of products. Their processes and production lines are then further focused within product sub-divisions.Responsible for all the activities within his area, from pre-weighing to dispatch, is the Production Centre Manager, whose role also encompasses staff development, training and motivation. Within the focused production centres, improvement groups have been working on improving shop-floor flexibility, quality and efficiency. One of the projects reduced the setup times on the line which produces hair colourants from 2. 5 hours to only eight minutes. These new changeover times mean that the company can now justify even smaller batches, and may give the company the flexibility to meet market needs just-in-time.Prior to the change in setup time, batch size was 30 000 units; now batches as small as 2000– 3000 units can be produced costeffectively. Considering his long teaching career of 15 years, this says a lot about William as a student and a person. Also like in the last example, Mr. Jackson focuses on a few core aspects of William's character. He talks about his love of history and how it informs his social activism. He comments on his exceptional historical scholarship, as well as his personal qualities of caring for those around him and working for the social good. Mr. Jackson also gives insight into William's personal life, explaining how he has a personal connection to his projects and volunteer work as the child of immigrant parents. This letter reveals that William is a thoughtful, motivated individual who connects his own experiences with his learning and desire to contribute to his community. The letter also showcases William's exceptional accomplishments by giving specific examples of William's research paper and his work supporting the academic and personal needs of ELL students. Mr. Jackson expresses his enthusiastic recommendation while illuminating William's love of learning and strength of character. This letter would be both impressive and memorable to admissions officers considering William for admission to their school. This next example comes from a math teacher. Let's see what Mr. Wiles has to say about Joe. Sample Letter #4:Joe the Hard Worker Dear Admissions Committee, It is my pleasure to recommend Joe, who I taught in my th grade math class. Joe demonstrated tremendous effort and growth throughout the year and brought a great energy to class. He has that combination of a positive attitude and the belief that he can always improve that's rare in a high school student, but so essential to the learning process. I am confident that he will continue to display the same commitment and diligence in everything he does. I highly recommend Joe for admission to your school. Joe would not describe himself as a math person. He's told me on several occasions that all the numbers and variables make his mind go fuzzy. Joe did, in fact, struggle to comprehend the material at the beginning of the year, but his response to this is what really struck me. Where so many others have given up, Joe took on this class as a welcome challenge. He stayed after school for extra help, got extra tutoring at the nearby college, and asked questions in and out of class.Due to all his hard work, Joe not only raised his grades, but he also inspired some of his classmates to stay after for extra help, as well. Joe truly demonstrated a growth mindset, and he inspired his peers to adopt that valuable perspective, too. While he initially described himself as not a math person, Joe reaped the benefits of his tremendous effort and found a way to make the subject come alive for him in a way that he was personally invested in. However, this recommendation is still a strong one, even if it says he struggled in the teacher's class. What does Mr. Wiles focus on to recommend Joe? The Breakdown Mr. Wiles writes a strong letter for Joe, with the same kind of enthusiasm and specific examples as the other three letters. Even though Joe may not have gotten the strongest grades in his math class, he found an enthusiastic recommender in his math teacher. Mr. Wiles was extremely impressed with Joe's attitude, effort, and growth mindset, which he demonstrated throughout the year and inspired in his fellow classmates. Mr. Wiles focuses on Joe's substantial personal strengths, ones that would likely be impressive to his future educators. Even in a subject that may not come naturally to him, Joe is diligent and committed. He's not self-conscious about asking questions or seeking extra help, and he retains a strong belief in himself that he can continuously learn, improve, and acquire new skills. This letter, like the others, is effective because it is focused, supportive, and backed up with examples.As you can tell from these examples, recommendations can communicate a great deal about a student. Because of this, they can have a powerful impact on a student's chances of admission. So what can teachers and students do to make sure they are sending a strong recommendation letter that will help their chances? Enthusiasm is key. How to Get a Strong Recommendation Letter While these letters are about different students with different interests, they share certain fundamental features. One, they sound excited and enthusiastic. The teachers clearly communicate that they are impressed by these students and eager to help them get into college. At the same time, the letters don't go overboard because they have examples to back up their assessments. Specific examples and stories are key for backing up the assessment. Plus, they make a letter more interesting and memorable. Rather than just another engineering applicant, Stacy is the student who researched sound-absorption to spare her parents from hours of guitar scales. Finally, the teachers all discuss their students' personal strengths, along with their academic strengths. They present the holistic view that admissions officers are looking for, along with their strong vote of confidence in the students' future success. Teachers should incorporate all these features into their letters, and students should help provide them with the raw material to write about. While students should choose a teacher who knows them well and has stories and observations to share, they should also give their teachers a detailed "brag sheet" and let them know what would go into their ideal letter. That way it can be even more personalized and complement the story the student is telling in the rest of her application. While recommenders may or may not share their letters with students, there should still be open, two-way communication when the student makes her request. That way students and teachers can work together to produce an insightful, enthusiastic, and specific letter of recommendation to send to colleges. Hola would be understood anywhere but is not customary in many places.Adià ³s - Goodbye - ah-THYOHSS  -   An informal alternative in many areas is chau (pronounced chow, sometimes spelled ciao, from Italian). ¿Cà ³mo ests?  ¿Cà ³mo est? - How are you? - KOH-moh es-TAHSS, KOH-moh es-TAH - The first form (which is informal) normally would be used with someone you know on a first-name basis or when speaking with a child. The second form generally would be used in other situations. Usage can depend quite a bit on where you are; in some areas, the informal form (ests) would be expected where under the same circumstances the formal form would be used in other areas. If youre a foreigner, chances are no one will criticize you for using the wrong form, although you may be politely corrected. Muy bien, gracias - Very well, thank you  - mwee-vyenn GRAHSS-yahss.Buenos dà ­as - Good day, good morning - BWEH-nohss DEE-ahss -   In some areas, a shortened form, buen dà ­a, is used.Buenas tardes - Good afternoon, good evening - BWEH-nahss TAR-dess -   In most areas, buenas tardes should be used in the early evening in preference to buenas noches.Buenas noches - Good night - BWEH-nahss NOH-chess -   Unlike the English translation, buenas noches can be used as a greeting as well as a farewell. ¿Cà ³mo te va?  ¿Cà ³mo le va?  ¿Quà © tal?  ¿Quà © hay? - Hows it going? -   KOH-moh teh-VAH, KOH-moh leh-VAH, kay-TALL, kay-AYE - There is also a variety of colloquial alternatives, although many of them depend on the area. The first one given is informal, used as with  ¿Cà ³mo ests? above. ¿Quà © pasa? - Whats happening?  - kay PAHSS-ah. ¿Quà © hubo?  ¿Quà © onda? - How is it going? Whats happening? - kay OO-boh, kay OHN-dah -   These phrases are most common in Mexico. ¿Cà ³mo te llamas?  ¿Cà ³mo se llama usted? - Whats your name? - KOH-moh teh YAHM-mahss, KOH-moh seh YAHM-mah oo-STETH  -   A literal translation would be What do you call yourself? or, somewhat less literally, What are you called? The first form normally would be used with a child, or possibly with someone of equal social status at an informal occasion. If youre uncertain which form to use, the second one is safer. Me llamo (nombre).- My name is (name). - meh YAHM-moh (NOHM-breh)  -   A literal translation would be I call myself (name) or, somewhat less literally, I am called (name). You can also literally translate the English: Mi nombre es (nombre).Mucho gusto. Encantado. - Its a pleasure to meet you. - MOO-choh GOO-stoh, en-kahn-TAH-thoh. Either of these could be said when someone introduces him- or herself to you. If youre female, you should say encantada  (en-kahn-TAH-thah) instead of encantado.Bienvenido, bienvenida, bienvenidos, bienvenidas - Welcome - byem-beh-NEE-thoh, byem-beh-NEE-thah,  byem-beh-NEE-thohss,  byem-beh-NEE-thahss  -   Note the difference in number and gender. Bienvenido would be used with a man, bienvenida with a woman, bienvenidas with a group of all females, and bienvenidos with males or a mixed group.
